A price far below what shops that give a written warranty charge is a warning, but it does not prove a phone is fake. A seller's reputation does not prove it is genuine either. No single test settles it from a listing. Several checks can only be done with the device in your hands. We found no documented cases of cloned iPhones in Colombia for this guide, so the warnings below are general signs and not a list of Colombian scams.
How do I tell if an iPhone is original?
Before paying:
- Compare the price with what the specialist shops ask, which state their warranty on their site. A "refurbished" iPhone at a fraction of that range is a warning, not a bargain.
- Ask the seller for the model number and the IMEI of the device in writing. If they do not give them, move to the next listing.
- Check whether the IMEI is reported on imeicolombia.com.co. How to do it is in how to check an IMEI.
With the device in your hands:
- Dial *#06# and compare the IMEI with the one in Settings > General > About, and with the one on the box and the invoice. They must match. If the device has two SIMs, check both.
- On that same screen, Apple shows the part number first, and tapping it shows the A#### model number, which identifies the hardware variant. Compare both with the box label and with Apple's specifications. Apple says that on an iPhone 8 or later with a SIM tray the model number is also in the tray slot, and on iPhones without a tray, on the connector. What each variant means is in Chinese, US or European iPhone.
- If the iPhone was repaired, "Parts and Service History" appears (since iOS 15.2). It shows whether the battery, screen, logic board or cameras have genuine Apple parts, unknown parts, unverified parts or parts used in another iPhone.
- Erase the device (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings) and confirm that on startup it does not ask for someone else's Apple ID. Apple says not to accept a used iPhone or iPad protected by Activation Lock. Third-party pages that claim to check it by IMEI have no confirmed accuracy.
What Reacondi's data shows
Reacondi compares prices and does not sell or touch devices. We reviewed 450 iPhone and Samsung listings with refurbished condition on Mercado Libre Colombia on 25 September 2026 (300 for iPhone and 150 for Samsung, the first ones the search returns in each case, not the whole catalogue).
- Prices ran from $125.000 to $5.470.699. The median was $1.675.063: $1.960.940 for the Apple listings and $1.305.128 for the Samsung ones.
- By iPhone model, the medians were $790.264 for the iPhone 11 (19 listings), $1.082.641 for the 12 (20), $1.350.000 for the 13 (54), $1.747.410 for the 14 (59), $2.530.858 for the 15 (84) and $3.190.000 for the 16 (35). Each figure mixes different storage sizes and grades, so it works as a reference and not as the price of one specific device.
- 227 of the 450 listings (50%) carried Mercado Libre's international tag. The median for those was $1.159.248, and for the rest, $2.276.900. They mix different models, so it does not show that international devices are cheaper for the same device.
- 65 listings came from official stores, 52 from Assurant Ecophone and 13 from Celucambio. In the other 385 listings our data carry no seller name, so we do not know who sells most of what we reviewed.
A low price does not prove a device is fake. A very low price against the range above, with no shop behind it stating its warranty, is a reason to ask for the IMEI and the model before paying. Mercado Libre requires every refurbished listing to state a warranty, and to enter its refurbished catalogue it asks for one of three grades (Excelente, Bueno or Aceptable) with more than 80% battery. We did not read what the platform checks on each listing. A seller reputation measures delivery, and we do not know whether it measures authenticity.
Many of those devices come from abroad. A phone bought abroad must be registered with the carrier, and an unregistered IMEI gets an SMS and 20 calendar days before it is blocked, as explained in how to check an IMEI.
Warning signs before paying
- A price far below the range of the specialist shops.
- The seller gives no IMEI or model number in writing.
- The seller avoids answering whether the device is original.
- The seller asks you to pay outside the site where the listing is. We did not read the buyer protection terms of Mercado Libre Colombia, so ask what they cover, and know that a payment made off the site falls outside whatever the platform may cover.
- The seller offers to "send the unlock" after payment. Do not accept, because an iPhone tied to another person's account can only be released by that person.
- The seller presents as working a device that it actually sells "for parts".
If you already bought it
Keep everything, the packaging, photos of the package when you open it, screenshots of the listing and of the conversation. On a distance purchase, if no legal exception applies, you have five business days from delivery to withdraw (article 47 of Ley 1480 de 2011), and you must return the product in the same condition you received it. If you paid by card or another electronic payment and the product did not arrive, is not what you ordered or arrived defective, you can ask for the payment to be reversed, with the complaint to the seller within the next five business days and notice to the payment issuer (article 51). After that the shop warranty and the legal rights that apply come into play, and if nobody answers you can go to the SIC, which has an online form and the free line 01 8000 910165. The detail is in your rights when buying refurbished.
