Before paying for a refurbished laptop, read the shop's whole warranty, ask what battery percentage the grade you are buying promises and confirm whether the installed Windows has a licence or is a trial version. When it arrives, measure the battery, run the maker's diagnostic and check that the machine is not still tied to the company that used it before. Do it in the first days, because on a distance purchase the law gives you five business days from delivery to withdraw, and it leaves out, among others, goods that by their nature cannot be returned, without saying whether a used laptop falls there. Prices by shop are on laptops.

The checklist before and after buying

  1. Open the shop's warranty page and read all of it. Note the term, what it covers and what it excludes.
  2. Ask what battery percentage the grade you are buying promises.
  3. Ask whether Windows comes with a licence or as a trial version.
  4. Look up the exact processor model in Microsoft's list of approved CPUs for Windows 11.
  5. Ask the seller to confirm in writing that the machine has no BIOS password, that it left Absolute and that it was deregistered from Windows Autopilot.
  6. Check that the listing and the invoice say the device is used or refurbished.
  7. When it arrives, photograph the sealed package and the machine, and report knocks the same day.
  8. Turn it on with internet and see whether a screen from an organisation appears.
  9. Generate the battery report with powercfg /batteryreport.
  10. Run the maker's diagnostic.
  11. Keep the box, packaging, invoice and warranty.

Grades change from shop to shop

There is no single scale. Mercado Libre Colombia requires a grade attribute to enter its refurbished catalogue, with three values. Excelente means subtle signs of use and a screen with no marks or imperfections. Bueno means small signs of use and a screen with no marks or imperfections. Aceptable means noticeable signs of use and a screen with scratches or scrapes. All three ask for more than 80% battery capacity. In addition, every refurbished listing must state a warranty, although we did not confirm the minimum. We did not read laptop listings on Mercado Libre Colombia, so we do not know how many there are.

The shops' own sites use other words. RenoPC, which focuses on laptops and desktops, publishes Grado A (like new, no visible marks), Grado B (light signs of use) and Grado C (visible signs of use), and says the grade affects only the cosmetic look. Refurbi uses Reacondicionado, Reacondicionado Certificado, Open box, Outlet and Exhibición. Clevercel, Celucambio and QuieroMac use Como Nuevo, Semi Nuevo and Outlet. We did not read the grade definitions of all those shops for laptops, so compare the battery percentage and the faults each grade admits, not the name of the grade.

The warranty is what the shop states

This is what the shops that may carry laptops stated on 1 October 2026. Confirm that the term applies to laptops in the offer you choose.

  • RenoPC. 2 years on every device from the delivery date. If the device fails it repairs, replaces or refunds. It does not cover damage from knocks, drops or liquids, or normal wear, which includes a battery with normal cycles. It writes on its page that the legal minimum for a refurbished device is 3 months. That is its reading of the law, which does not use the word "reacondicionado".
  • Refurbi. 14 months of hardware repair cover, through a limited warranty, according to its page. It sells laptops as well as phones.
  • QuieroMac. Its page says six months, and Outlet devices have no warranty. It sells Apple devices.
  • Éxito. Each seller sets it on each offer, and we saw 3, 6, 12 and 14 months on different listings.
  • Mercado Libre. Each seller sets its own, and we did not read the minimum.

A shop's terms are not the legal warranty. How they relate is in the section on your rights below.

Activated Windows is not the same as genuine Windows

Microsoft explains that activation pairs the product key or digital entitlement with the device's hardware, and that it does not assess the authenticity of the copy or guarantee that the copy of Windows is genuine. Ask before paying whether Windows comes with a licence or as a trial version, and add the cost of a licence if it is not included. We did not read what each Colombian shop says about the Windows licence on its laptops.

Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Microsoft offers a consumer Extended Security Updates programme that protects the device until 12 October 2027; we did not confirm whether it is sold in Colombia. Windows 11 requires TPM version 2.0 and a processor of 1 GHz or faster with 2 or more cores that appears on Microsoft's list of approved CPUs. An old laptop may not qualify. Look up the exact processor model on that list before buying.

The battery

Windows generates a battery report. Open the Command Prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. Windows saves the report as an HTML file. In the installed batteries section, compare the design capacity with the full charge capacity.

Compare full charge capacity with design capacity and with the percentage the shop promised you in writing. Mercado Libre's 80% is that platform's rule, not a legal threshold or a maker's promise.

What the previous company may have left

Many refurbished laptops come from companies, and there are three locks the buyer cannot remove alone.

BIOS password. Lenovo says in the manual of its ThinkPad T14 and T16 that, if the supervisor password is forgotten, there is no service procedure to remove it. The system board has to be replaced by an authorised provider, with a charge for parts and service. Dell gives a release code to whoever contacts support with the error code, and according to Dell it is the only option for laptops. We could not read HP's page on this topic.

Absolute, formerly Computrace. Absolute says the component is embedded in the firmware on compatible devices and, once activated, reinstalls its software if it is removed. We could not read how a corporate customer releases a device, so ask the seller to confirm the machine left Absolute.

Windows Autopilot. Microsoft says a device that permanently leaves an organisation should always be deregistered from Autopilot, and it describes the steps an administrator follows. The practical test is to turn on the laptop with internet and see whether a screen from an organisation appears. If it does, the machine is still tied to it.

The maker's diagnostic

HP publishes that its HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI tool runs outside the operating system and lets hardware faults be separated from those caused by Windows or other software. It is useful for testing battery, memory and disk when you receive the machine. Look for your brand's tool and run it before the withdrawal period closes. The general checklist is in what to check when your refurbished phone arrives.

Your rights in Colombia

Ley 1480 de 2011 sets no fixed warranty term for electronics. Article 8 says the term is the one the producer or seller announces, and one year for new products if none is stated. A used product whose legal warranty has expired can be sold without warranty only if you accept that in writing, and otherwise it is understood to carry three months. The law does not use the word "reacondicionado", so whether that rule reaches your laptop depends on how the shop disclosed and sold it. Ask for the warranty in writing. Each offer in Reacondi shows the warranty the shop states.

On a distance purchase, when no legal exception applies, article 47 gives five business days from delivery to withdraw. You send the product back by the same means and in the same condition you received it and pay the return transport, and in e-commerce the money must be refunded within a maximum of fifteen calendar days. The law leaves out, among others, goods for personal use and goods that by their nature cannot be returned, and it does not say whether a refurbished laptop falls there. Refurbi states it extended the period to 30 calendar days, only for purchases made directly from Refurbi. Check the laptop to confirm it works, run the diagnostic and do not use it as your work machine or install your life on it until you decide.

If the shop does not answer, make the claim in writing and then go to the Superintendencia de Industria y Comercio (SIC), which has an online form and the free line 01 8000 910165. The full route is in your rights when buying refurbished, and the signs of a fake device are in how to tell if a phone is original or fake.
